Match 63- Chennai Super Kings IPL Team vs Kolkata Knight Riders IPL Team- 14/05/2012
The Kolkata crowd saw a cliff hanger, though their home team, Kolkata Knight Riders, ended up on the losing side. Chennai Super Kings, who the experts of the game believe, are peaking at the right time after having an ordinary start to this year’s IPL, beat the KKR off the last ball. And the last ball hero this time was Dwayne Bravo, who hit six off the last ball when CSK required five runs for victory.
After getting an excellent start from the openers Hussey and Murali Vijay, CSK lost their way in the middle overs when the two openers went back to the pavilion. There was a time when CSK could only manage 19 runs off five overs. This lean period came between the 10th and 15th over. The situation became worse, thanks to some tight bowling by the KKR bowlers in the end overs, especially Sunil Narine, who gave away just 14 runs off his four overs, CSK required 27 runs off the last two overs. With Bravo and skipper MS Dhoni at the crease, the target looked difficult to achieve but not impossible as both these batsmen are known to be big-hitters. And Dhoni showed why he’s counted as one of the greatest finishers of the game as he hit couple of fours and a six, scoring 18 runs off the M de Lange penultimate over. So, now the CSK needed 9 runs of the last over. KKR skipper Gambhir threw the ball to Rajat Bhatia, who has performed decently well throughout this IPL, to ball the last over. He castled Dhoni off the second delivery of the over. Jadeja replaced Dhoni and took two runs off the next ball. He then took a single to give the strike to Bravo. With five runs remaining off the last two deliveries, Bravo tried to finish things off of the penultimate ball by hitting a massive six. But as Bravo swung his bat to hit the ball, the bat slipped out of his hand and went towards mid-on, resulting in a dot ball. Now, it all came down to the last ball in which CSK required five runs to win the game and a four to tie and take the match to the super over. Bhatia came charging in to ball the last delivery. He tried to york Bravo but unfortunately for him and his team, he bowled a full toss. Bravo’s eye lit up seeing the full toss and he hit the ball over long on for a huge six, giving his side a much needed victory to stay in contention for the playoffs. Though Bravo emerged as a hero winning the game on the last ball, the credit of the victory goes to the openers, Vijay and Hussey, who gave their team a rollicking start. Hussey started the innings fluently hitting fours and sixes at will. He was well supported by Vijay who scored 36 runs off 25 ball. Both gave CSK a wonderful start before Hussey got out scoring 56 runs off 39 balls when the team’s total was 97.
Something similar to CSK happened with KKR as their openers, Gambhir and McCullum gave them a solid start by adding 99 for the first wicket. Gambhir continued his superb form in IPL V by scoring another half century. He made 63 runs off 43 ball while McCullum scored a quick-fire 37 off 29 balls. But the KKR middle order collapsed and at one point of time it looked as if they will struggle to reach even 150 runs. But Debabrata Das’ whirlwind knock of 19 runs off 10 deliveries with the help of two fours and a six enabled KKR to reach a respectable total of 158 runs. But unfortunately, that score didn’t turn out to be enough as CSK overhauled it off the last ball of the match. With this win, CSK are now placed at number four in the points table, just below KKR. Though KKR and CSK are tied with equal points (17), KKR is at number three in the points table as they have a better net run rate than CSK.
